Rookie Wranglers Come Home ICBA Champs!! The playoff tournament, played in Cambridge, was set up as a 5 team round robin playoff, where Woodstock would face the other 4 Senior Rookie teams to determine the 2010 champions.
The first game was last Thursday against the Guelph Royals, where Woodstock won 21 - 11. The team came out swinging by sending 10 players to the plate in each of the first 3 innings, building a large lead which finished in a mercy of Guelph after 5 innings. Blaine Hahn started things off with a solid single in the first inning and the Wranglers never looked back. Other players who came to hit this game included Jordan Kelner who had 3 hits and Nicholas Gibson who also had 3 hits.
In game 2 on Saturday morning the Wranglers played the Brantford Red Sox in a preview to the final on Sunday. Once again Woodstock came out swinging and mercied the first place team 15 - 4 in 5 innings. The team started a little slow in the first inning by not scoring any runs, but made up for it by scoring 5 in the second, 3 in the 3rd and 7 in the fifth inning. The defence was as good as it has been all year in this game limiting Brantford to just 4 runs. Benny Hart played some stellar defence along with his 2 singles to add to the offensive output. David Ficht added a double and 2 singles to help the offence make short work of the Red Sox. Cory Ratcliffe had 4 RBI's with a home run and a single. His home run was key to leading the team to the mercy of the Red Sox.
Game 3 on Saturday afternoon was set up against the Waterloo Tigers. Woodstock has had problems with the second place team all season and this game was no different. It went down to the bottom of the 7th inning tied 12-12 when Waterloo scored the winning run on a close play at the plate. Offensively the Wranglers were led by Aaron Canfield with 2 singles, Connor Stefan with a single and a triple and David Ficht with a double and 2 singles. The Tigers continued their dominance over the Wranglers by squeaking out this win which put the Wranglers in a must win situation later on Saturday against the Stratford Indians.
Saturday evening's game was an affair where everyone was tired after a long day on baseball. Woodstock started slow, but exploded in the 3rd inning for 8 runs in a 16 - 6 win over Stratford. The Wranglers had fallen behind 6 - 0 after 2 innings, but scored 16 unanswered runs in the mercy rule shortened game. Bailey Couch led the team in their comeback win with 3 solid singles along with Dennis Larocque's 2 hits and Matthew Houle's 2 singles. Once again the defense played a solid game outside of the one inning where they gave up the 6 runs to Stratford, shutting them out for the rest of the game.
With a 3 and 1 record, Woodstock had secured a place in the final and had to wait to find out who won the game between Brantford and Guelph who both possesed a 2 and 1 record going into Sunday morning. As it turned out Brantford Red Sox prevailed to give them another shot at Woodstock in the final. The final proved to be the most exciting game of the tournament with both teams changing leads throughout the game. Woodstock jumped out to a 3 - 1 lead after 1 inning and 8 - 3 after 2 innings, but saw the leads evaporate to a 12 - 8 deficit after 4 innings and 16 - 11 after six innings. With a 5 run deficit the Wranglers needed to come up with one of their biggest innings of the year against a very solid Red Sox team. Aaron Canfield started the inning off with a single up the middle, but he was erased when Benny Hart hit a hard shot to shortstop who made a good play to force Canfield at second. The Wranglers proceeded to slam 8 straight hits to score 7 runs to take the lead 18 - 16. Key hits in the inning were supplied by Tyler Kean's 2 out double and Connor Stefan's 2 out triple. Matthew Houle added 3 singles in the game in his best hitting performance of the weekend. Now it was up to the defence to hold the first place Red Sox. The Wranglers did just that with solid plays and a game ending tag out at third base by David Ficht on a great throw from Cory Ratcliffe.
The kids came to play this weekend and proved they can be a very good team, not only in our own league but in the province. They are going to Chatham next weekend to play in the Baseball Ontario Provincial Championships. They have as good a chance as anyone at this tournament and if we play like we did this past weekend, we have an excellent chance of bringing a Provincial Championship back to Woodstock.
